Will Feature on GŴYL 2021, Which Takes Place This Friday and Saturday

BBC Cymru, the Welsh division of BBC, will be streaming the GŴYL 2021 festival this Friday and Saturday. The stream will feature a set of performances from Suede’s Brett Anderson, Charles Hazlewood, and Paraorchestra (the set has been titled Death Songbook). One of the performances, a cover of Mercury Rev’s 1999 song “Holes,” which features contributions by Nadine Shah and Portishead’s Adrian Utley, has been shared. More

Back in February, before the pandemic overtook America, Matt Berninger of The National shared a cover of Mercury Rev’s classic “Holes,” from their 1998 album Deserter’s Songs. For last night’s Late Show with Stephen Colbert he performed the cover from home, aided remotely by Steph Altman on piano. More

Matt Berninger of The National has shared a cover of Mercury Rev’s classic “Holes,” from their 1998 album Deserter’s Songs. It’s part of the 7-Inches for Planned Parenthood series and was shared via a video for the cover. The National, meanwhile, have covered INXS’ “Never Tear Us Apart” for the new Australian bushfire relief compilation, Songs for Australia. More

This the closest we’ve come in awhile to skipping Songs of the Week due to a lack of truly worthy songs. This year Mercury Rev are celebrating the 20th anniversary of arguably their most acclaimed and beloved album, 1998’s Deserter’s Songs. The album topped (or charted high) on many best albums of 1998 lists and immediately went on to influence other acclaimed albums, such as The Flaming Lips’ The Soft Bulletin in 1999 and The Delgados’ The Great Eastern in 2000 (both also produced by Mercury Rev’s Dave Fridmann).
