We sent out the same set of Halloween-related questions to a bunch of different musicians. All Halloween week we are posting their responses. Here are some spooky answers from Josh Kolenik of Small Black.
What was the best Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the best Halloween you ever had?
I was an Ewok—age 7. My mom sewed all my costumes from scratch. So it pretty much looked like I’d just walked off the set and onto somebody’s porch on Long Island. I really loved Halloween so much and took the costume planning very seriously through my younger years. I was gunning for that first place medal in the costume contest and my mom proved a worthy accomplice.
What was the worst Halloween costume you ever dressed up in and/or what was the worst Halloween you ever had?
I dressed up as Garfield in sixth grade and I was definitely too old for it and got ridiculed all day at school. So I went home, ate some lasagna and went out in the night as a crap vampire or something. Sixth grade is when Halloween starts to become real, especially on Long Island. You’d hear rumors of high school kids spraying the kid down the block from you with Nair and never being able to grow hair again. Paintball guns were a serious epidemic as well. I went out with my friends and got promptly shaving-creamed and egged in the park and generally got the tar beat out of me. Never have really felt the same way about Halloween since.
What do you plan to dress up as for Halloween this year?
I found the Ewok mask I had last year and it still fits in some capacity, so I’ll probably be an “Ewok on Acid at Charles Barkley’s House 1994” again this year.
What’s your favorite scary movie?
I’ve lead a horror free lifestyle for a long time, but I can get down with Rosemary’s Baby. Don’t like gore/slasher stuff. I can’t shake those flicks from my memory.
What’s your favorite spooky song?
Bauhaus: “Bela Lugosi’s Dead.”
