Who better to give us all tips on new music than accomplished musicians themselves. For this new series we have asked more established artists one simple request: tell us who your new favorite band is. For this My Favorite New Band Norwegian singer/songwriter Sondre Lerche tells us about a new band from his home country. Lerche’s new album, Please, is out September 23 via Mona. Below also check out a video of Lerche playing album cut and single “Bad Law” to a classroom of Norwegian kindergarteners.

Verdensrommet (means “The Universe”) are a band from Norway that I’ve been following ever since they opened for me two years ago in Bergen. That short set left the entire room’s collective jaw on the floor. It was incredibly inspiring to witness, especially right before going on stage to play my own set. They still haven’t put out an album, apparently it’s coming later this year. They’ve only released four songs that I’ve played over and over for over a year now. Especially this song called “Nytt.” It has meant a lot to me the past year. I must’ve turned to it a thousand times already. It breaks my heart, every time. Their lyrics are in Norwegian, but that hasn’t prevented them from already being praised by The Guardian and several other major publications outside of Norway. I could say they sound like a mix between Joy Division and Animal Collective, but their upcoming debut album is said to be quite different from the songs I’ve been listening to, so who knows what’s to come. All I know is I can’t wait.
