Bon Iver (the project of Justin Vernon) released a new album, i,i, in August via Jagjaguwar. It was just nominated for several Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. Now they have shared a strange video for the album’s “Naeem” that features a mysterious floating rock that contains a stream of water. AG Rojas wrote and directed the clip, which a press release points out is Bon Iver’s first full-on music video since 2012’s “Beth/Rest.” Watch it below, followed by the band’s upcoming tour dates.
Rojas had this to say about the video in a press release: “‘Naeem’ is concerned with the potential for intergenerational healing, and how we choose to engage with that potential. All my admiration and love to Cynthia Rodriguez and her child Azul who brought this idea to life, and to Bon Iver for amplifying it.”
The album includes two songs Bon Iver shared in June, “Hey, Ma” and “U (Man Like),” via videos for each track. “U (Man Like)” was one of our Songs of the Week. Then when the album was announced they shared two more songs from it, “Jelmore” and “Faith,” via lyric videos for each track. Then in August they shared lyric videos for eight new songs from the album and released the album digitally three weeks early.
The album is the follow-up to 2016’s 22, A Million. The main Bon Iver lineup for the i,i sessions was Vernon, Sean Carey, Andrew Fitzpatrick, Mike Lewis, and Matt McCaughan, with Rob Moose and Jenn Wasner (of Wye Oak and Flock of Dimes).
It features a slew of special guests, including James Blake, Moses Sumney, Bruce Hornsby, Brad and Phil Cook, Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Bruce Hornsby, Channy Leaneagh, Naeem, Velvet Negroni, Marta Salogni, Francis Starlite, TU Dance, and more.
