The first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife has been shared. It's essentially Ghostbusters 3, the long-awaited follow-up to 1989's Ghostbusters 2, and ignores 2016's female-led Ghostbusters reboot (which makes sense, since that film ignored the original Ghostbusters movies). Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Paul Rudd and is expected to feature the return of original Ghostbusters actors Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts (alas Harold Ramis is no longer with us), although none of them are in the trailer. Instead, the trailer centers on Callie, a single mom played by Carrie Coon (The Leftovers) who is broke and moves with her two kids, Wolfhard as Trevor and Mckenna Grace (Captain Marvel) as Phoebe, to a run down old family house. Watch the trailer below to see how the family connects to the original Ghostbusters team and for an appearance of the Ecto-1 car.

Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air, Young Adult) directed and co-wrote the film and he's the son of Ivan Reitman, director of the first two Ghostbusters films (who also produced this one). Ghostbusters: Afterlife is due out July 10, 2020 via Sony. For those up in arms that it disregards 2016's Ghostbusters, that remake made no reference to the original Ghostbusters films and treated the female-led Ghostbusters as the first Ghostbusters team, so there would be no logical way to have Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth involved or referenced in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Should be interesting to see how this turns out. I don’t hate the 2016 movie either with the female lineup, but this being in the lineage of the originals will definitely help it
