Premiere: Kevin Daniel Shares Video for “Used to Be” Featuring Childhood Home Movie Footage

Brooklyn-based Americana musician Kevin Daniel is releasing his debut full-length album, Things I Don’t See, on September 20 via Smith Music Group. Now he has shared a touching video for the album’s previously shared single, “Used to Be,” and we have the premiere of it. Eric Ambrosino directed the video, which combines home movie footage of Daniel with his family as a child with newly shot images of Daniel performing the song now. For example, there is footage of Daniel as a baby in his mother’s arms at the beach intercut with an adult Daniel singing the song on the beach. This is all the more moving because Daniel’s mother and stepfather tragically died in a small plane crash in 2013. Watch the video below, followed by Daniel’s upcoming tour dates.
Daniel had this to say about the video in a statement: “This is one of my favorite songs on the album, and I knew I wanted to do something special. A while ago my dad sent me old footage from family home videos taken in the ‘80s. He had since transferred them to DVD, and they contain lots of great shots of me and my late mother. My director friend Eric and I took the old footage, and shot new footage based on both the song lyrics and home videos. The result is a mashup of new and old. I was incredibly moved when I saw the first take and I think people will see the truth in the footage.”
Kenny Siegel (Langhorne Slim, Joseph Arthur, Chris Whitley) produced “Used to Be” and two other songs on Things I Don’t See (“Things I Don’t See” and “Xanax, Cocaine, & Whiskey”). Ben Rice produced the rest of the album. Things I Don’t See follows Daniel’s first two EPs, 2014’s FLY and 2017’s Myself Through You. Daniel’s backing band on the album includes Will Bryant (organ/keys), Lee Falco (drums), and Brandon Morrison (bass), who are all members of The Restless Age, along with guitarist Jon LaDeau from The National Reserve.
Daniel grew up in Tarboro, North Carolina. He began singing when he was five and soon was studying piano and saxophone. By middle school he was playing in state symphonic bands and touring with classical horn trios. Eventually Daniel attended Washington, D.C.‘s George Washington University. After school he relocated to Brooklyn in 2013. It was there that he got the phone call from his sister telling him that their mother and stepfather, who were amateur pilots, had died in a small plane crash on the way back to their mountain home in western North Carolina. Daniel returned home to North Carolina to be with his family, deal with his grief, and help with the family business. The whole experience fueled his debut EP, FLY, which was recorded in Brooklyn in 2014 and helped launch his musical career, now leading to Things I Don’t See.
