It has been reported by The New York Times that Leonard Nimoy, the star of the Star Trek television and film series, has passed away in his Bel Air home. Nimoy’s wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, says the cause of his death is endstage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This disease is the result of Nimoy’s smoking habit which he had given up for over 30 years before he was hospitalized. The actor, director, musician, poet, and photographer was 83.

Aside from his massive fan-base as Captain Kirk’s right-hand-man and best friend, Mr. Spock, on the Star Trek television series in the ‘60s and film series in the ‘80s, Nimoy had a multitude of creative endeavors. Nimoy directed 1984’s Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and 1986’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, as well as 1987’s Three Men and a Baby. Additionally, Nimoy had a rather prolific music career with songs playing off of his character as the Vulcan Mr. Spock. Such songs include, “Spock Thoughts” and “Highly Illogical.”

In more recent years he played Spock again in the two latest Star Trek big screen reboots helmed by JJ Abrams and played the recurring role of Dr. William Bell on FOX’s acclaimed sci-fi series Fringe.

This science fiction icon and creative dynamo will always remain a legend in the hearts of fans across the globe. Leonard Nimoy surely lived by his famous greeting as he lived a long and prosperous life.

Nimoy’s poetic final tweet from five days ago:

President Obama released this statement about Nimoy’s passing:

“Long before being nerdy was cool, there was Leonard Nimoy. Leonard was a lifelong lover of the arts and humanities, a supporter of the sciences, generous with his talent and his time. And of course, Leonard was Spock. Cool, logical, big-eared and level-headed, the center of Star Trek‘s optimistic, inclusive vision of humanity’s future.

“I loved Spock.

“In 2007, I had the chance to meet Leonard in person. It was only logical to greet him with the Vulcan salute, the universal sign for ‘Live long and prosper.’ And after 83 years on this planet - and on his visits to many others - it’s clear Leonard Nimoy did just that. Michelle and I join his family, friends and countless fans who miss him so dearly today.”
