This Week In Geek: Possible Candidates to Play Spider-Man + “Daredevil,” “Jurassic World”
Plus Riz Ahmed and Sam Claflin Join Star Wars: Rogue One, Franz Drameh Joins Arrow/Flash Spin-Off, and New Trailers for Fantastic Four and Jurassic World
Earlier this week, the shortlist of Marvel’s candidates to take over the role of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was leaked. The list is comprised of young actors ranging from 18-20 years of age. The possible choices are Liam James (TV’s “Psych,” The Way, Way Back), Asa Butterfield (Hugo, Ender’s Game), Timothee Chalamet (Interstellar), Nat Wolff (Paper Towns, The Fault In Our Stars) and Tom Holland (Locke, The Impossible). Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, told CraveOnline earlier this month, “There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU…. You just don’t know it yet…. In Spider-Man’s very specific case, where there have been two retellings of that origin in the last whatever it’s been- [13] years-for us we are going to take it for granted that people know that, and the specifics.” This new incarnation of Spider-Man will debut in Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016, with his own solo debut coming on July 28, 2017. In other Spidey news, it has been announced that Sony Pictures will release a stand-alone, animated Spider-Man film on July 20, 2018, about a year after the solo debut of the character in the MCU. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The LEGO Movie, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street) have signed on to direct (they are already writing and possible directing DC’s The Flash movie). News broke earlier this week that Netflix will continue their Marvel’s Daredevil series to a second season, which will premiere in 2016. To anyone who’s seen the show, this renewal is no surprise. Following this announcement, Charlie Cox sat down with Empire and shared his personal wishlist for what he hopes to see in season 2: “I have to be careful because we just got commissioned so I have no idea who is going to turn up,” Cox said. “Based on the show we’ve created, which is very grounded in reality, I’d like to see Punisher maybe show up, a little bit of Elektra maybe. I wouldn’t mind Black Widow making an appearance, and you can’t think about Daredevil for too long without thinking of Bullseye. I don’t know when or if or how that would happen, but it’d be cool if it did.” While the star of the show may share the same hopes as many fans, we won’t know what to expect until next year. In the meantime, Netflix will premiere their next Marvel series, A.K.A. Jessica Jones starring Krysten Ritter and David Tennant, later this year. Since last weekend’s Star Wars Celebration, it has been announced that Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler, Four Lions) and Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games: Catching Fire & MockingJay, Snow White and the Huntsman) are in talks to join the cast of the first Star Wars anthology film, Star Wars: Rogue One. Ahmed and Claflin will join Felicity Jones, the only other known cast member of the film. Rogue One will follow a group of rebel soldiers tasked with stealing the plans for the Death Star and will reportedly take place between Episodes III and IV. Star Wars: Rogue One will hit theaters on December 16, 2016. (via Superherohype.com)
Franz Drameh, previously seen in Attack the Block and Edge of Tomorrow, has been cast as the character of “Jay Jackson” in the upcoming Arrow/Flash spin-off for the CW. Drameh’s character is described by the CW as: “Jay Jackson, a former high school athlete, whose pro-career was derailed by injury. Now making ends meets as an auto mechanic, Jay will come to have a surprising affiliation to the S.T.A.R. Labs crew.” As of now, the spin-off has no title or timeline but is expected to premiere in 2016 (via Superherohype.com)
Additionally, another big name has been added to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad film. Common, fresh off his Academy Award win for best song (Selma‘s “Glory”), will join the DC Comics team-up film for a mystery role. He was once going to play the John Stewart version of Green Lantern in George Miller’s abandoned Justice League film, so one wonders if he’s returned to the role. Common will join the likes of Will Smith (“Deadshot”), Margot Robbie (“Harley Quinn”), and Jared Leto (“Joker”). Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 5, 2016. (via Superherohype.com)
