The National’s frontman Matt Berninger has teamed up with former Menomena member Brent Knopf (who also records as Ramona Falls) for the new project EL VY. The duo just released their great debut album as EL VY, Return to the Moon, last Friday via 4AD. Last night they opened their tour at Portland’s Doug Fir Lounge in what was essentially their first full on live show (beyond some shorter performances). During it they surprisingly covered Fine Young Cannibals’ monster hit “She Drives Me Crazy” (which was on their 1988 album The Raw & the Cooked and released as a single in 1989, when it hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100). Of course a fan video has surfaced, which you can watch below (via Stereogum). Berninger’s baritone is far removed from the higher pitched vocals of Fine Young Cannibals’ singer Roland Gift, but he pulls it off.
