There are several high profile movies on music legends on the way. We’ve already seen the first clips of Ethan Hawke as Chet Baker in Born to Be Blue and Tom Hiddleston as Hank Williams in I Saw the Light. Now we’ve been treated to the first scene of Don Cheadle as legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis in the upcoming Miles Ahead. The difference here is that Cheadle also co-wrote, directed, and crowd-funded the picture.
The clip below shows off a recording session and off the bat Cheadle nails Davis’ raspy voice. The film is partly set in the late ‘70s when the musician had withdrawn from public life and hadn’t made music for five years and also stars Ewan McGregor as a reporter who helps Davis get back some stolen music (although he’s not featured in the clip). It’s a parallel story that also centers on the earlier 10-year relationship Davis had with his first wife, Francis Taylor Davis (played by Emayatzy Corinealdi). Judging by Cheadle’s look in this clip, it seems it takes place in earlier time period.
Cheadle learned to play the trumpet for the role and got the blessing of Davis’ family. The film is having its world premiere closing out the New York Film Festival this Sunday and Yahoo! Movies posted the first clip.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last year Cheadle had this to say about Miles Ahead: “I wasn’t interested in [making a biopic], and I’m not interested by all the things that a traditional biopic does. I want to tell a hot story that’s full of his music that feels impressionistic in that it finds a way to incorporate all his musical styles and influences and ideas. It needs to feel like his approach: ‘I don’t care about what happened before. I’m about what’s happening now and about what’s happening next.’ That’s Miles’ marching orders to me.”
The film doesn’t have a release date yet, but will likely come out in 2016 sometime. Check out the clip below.
