Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine (aka Logan) for 16 years now, even since the very first X-Men film back in 2000. He actually almost didn’t get the part, originally Dougray Scott was cast in the role but had to back out at the last minute when there was a scheduling conflict with Mission: Impossible II. Jackman wasn’t well known at the time but was recommended to director Bryan Singer by his friend and fellow Australian actor Russell Crowe. Jackman joined the cast three months into filming and has gone on to become the most iconic aspect of the X-Men films while also avoiding typecasting and forging a successful career outside of the franchise. Next March 3rd Jackman’s final portrayal of Wolverine will be released. It’s simply titled Logan and below is the first trailer.

The film takes place in 2024, one year after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past. Patrick Stewart also stars as Professor Charles Xavier, in what could also be his last turn in the role he has also been playing for 16 years (James McAvoy also currently plays a younger version of the character). An aging Xavier seems to be fighting Alzheimer’s and asks Logan to help look after a young mutant named Laura Kinney (aka X-23), played by Dafne Keen. Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant, and Boyd Holbrook also star.

The film is partly based on the Old Man Logan comic book storyline by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. James Mangold directs. He made the last Wolverine movie, 2013’s The Wolverine, along with 3:10 to Yuma, Cop Land, and the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. The latter might explain why Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” soundtracks the trailer, which you can watch below in two slightly different versions (a U.S. one and U.K. one).
