White Fence
For the Recently Found Innocent

Only in the dust-caked, film grain world of Tim Presley could recording in Ty Segall’s garage be considered a major fidelity upgrade.
For the Recently Found Innocent is Presley’s sixth full-length as White Fence, and the first committed not to his bedroom four-track, but (wait for it) a fully functioning eight-track. Like all White Fence releases, it’s a product of Presley’s patchwork heart. Innocent‘s seams just happen to show less, and the master plan is more visible than ever before. Everything leading up to this LP functioned like fractured vignettes from a junkyard of rusting psych detritus. Innocent allows us to glimpse the entirety of that glorious wasteland from on high.
Rather than sidetracking song after song, the tape effect warp and bluesy, spindly soloing are now woven thoughtfully into the overall tapestry, allowing Presley to fully develop his ugly-pretty melodies. Special mention to possibly his best faux-Nugget yet: “Like That” floats like mid-‘60s Stones as they drifted from speed-crazed R&B into acid pop.
The end result isn’t as wholly immersive or adventurous as the White Album-like lo-fi wonderland of 2012’s Family Perfume, but paired with last year’s succinct Cyclops Reap, Innocent makes the perfect gateway drug to Presley’s lysergic canon. (www.facebook.com/pages/White-Fence/109125289153214)
