The West

The West, a companion piece to the film The Legend of God’s Gun, sees Spindrift striking out on their own, and from under the protected wings of The Brian Jonestown Massacre. L.A. native Kirpatrick Thomas and his seven bandmates go even further out on a limb, exploring klezmer, blues, carnival music, and sea shanties. While remaining loyally informed by its Spaghetti Western and psychedelic rock anchor, The West is expansive, but re-strained. “The Klezmer Song” sounds like the kind of nationalist music Borat would adore. “Goin’ Down” is an intergalactic noisy blues number that quickly shifts gears to the dusty Spaghetti Western tune, “A Celebra-tion of the Human Body.” None of these experiments is necessarily bad; they just lack focus. It’s hard for the listener to remain emotionally invested in such a hodgepodge effort when it’s separated from the film’s filthy visuals. (www.spindriftwest.com)
