When Philip Selway sat down to write the drum parts for his third solo album, Strange Dance, he knew he wanted to work with another drummer. Selway, whose reputation as Radiohead’s chief percussionist often precedes him, explains: “I realized [it] wasn’t happening within about a day and a half.” More

Radiohead’s consecutive experimental masterpieces Kid A and Amnesiac have continued to intrigue, perplex, and ultimately astound. Recorded during the same 1999–2000 sessions, their vast sonic landscapes remain objects of envy and emulation. Twenty years later, both releases have been reissued and combined into Kid A Mnesia, a monumental triple album release from XL. More

It’s easy to fall in too deep with Radiohead. If you don’t call them your favourite band then you know someone who does. When Radiohead release new material that person doesn’t just fawn over it: they obsess, listening on repeat to work out what this means for the band. More

Radiohead have been progressing from a standard rock band (albeit a damn good one) circa 1995’s The Bends and 1997’s OK Computer, into something more silvery, elliptical, and downright challenging, beginning with 2000’s epochal Kid A. However, their live shows still bring the rock action, to paraphrase Iggy Pop, and their astounding gig at Newark’s Prudential Center was no exception. More

(We’re running multiple reviews of Radiohead’s The King of Limbs. Read one written by Jim Scott here and below is Laura Studarus’ take on the album.) Radiohead, as we know it, is dead. The English quintet that blossomed from early ‘90s rock poster children to new century electro weirdos, has returned after four years in the studio with The King of Limbs, their eight full-length. But rather than shake up fans by delivering either a truly terrible album or an innovative collection (or even a terribly innovative collection), we’ve been given a standard workhorse album—eight songs of expert, paint-by-numbers Radioheadness. The King of Limbs opens with a snappy, off-kilter drumbeat, call-and-response electronics, and then Thom Yorke singing, “Open your mouth wide.” One minute into “Bloom” and the band’s first new album in four years, and the expectations could not be higher. And then… the beat continues, the electronics pulse on, and Yorke occasionally dips his toes in with a few lines here and there. “Bloom” never reaches the astounding heights Radiohead has become known for, but then again, neither does The King of Limbs. After the revolutionary OK Computer and Kid A/Amnesiac, Radiohead took a step sideways with Hail to the Thief. The band had refined its sound, and its particular brand of adventurous electronic/organic push/pull. More

The companion piece to Kid A, Radiohead’s Amnesiac is much more than a selection of outtakes or B-sides. Without the single-mindedness of Kid A, Amnesiac shows more range, both in terms of emotion and sound. More

Capitol gives Radiohead the reissue treatment on Kid A, Amnesiac, and Hail to the Thief, which should come as no surprise given the band’s stature and the current state of the music industry. There’s no question that this is a money grab, but whether it’s one that benefits the consumer depends on what they’ve found in the vaults to bolster albums that most people already own and don’t have much to gain from remastering or remixing.
