Day one of Coachella 2011 displayed several improvements over last year. There was less of a crowd (even though it was sold out this year, they put more of a limitation on how many tickets could be sold). Security was tighter and parking seemed less of a pain. And it even seemed as though the Mojave and Gobi tents were a little bigger this year and able to accommodate more fans. Highlights of the day included two bands from down under and some soft rockers; where-as two notable artists stormed off the stage.

Prince is guy Minneapolis-born musician whose slippery-sexy songs and desire to “party like it’s 1999” had defined a generation. Robyn is a Swedish chanteuse who lit up blogs last summer with her anti-party anthem, “Dancing On My Own” and tore up stages with her dynamic performances. So other than glossy pop, what do the two have in common? An “obscure” little Prince tune called “When Doves Cry.” More

Following numerous complaints of last year’s festival being far too crowded, this year Goldenvoice the organizers of Coachella 2011 made significant changes to address that concern. A wristband with a microchip is now necessary at all time during the festival, scanned at no fewer than two checkpoints on the way into the festival. Additionally, they also sold less tickets than last year. The result of both thus far (it might just be that many attendees couldn’t get Friday off from work) is a greatly improved experience. Even during headliner Kings of Leon there was plenty of room to maneuver and find a decent spot to watch the show. So in that respect, it’s already a great improvement on last year. This year’s music started off with an impressive array of talent, but had little in the way of jaw-dropping moments the festival has become famous for. More
