Long before they became known for dazzling concertgoers with bright lights, confetti, and a frontman bounding about in a space bubble; long before they hit it big with the melancholy single “Do You Realize?”; and long before they put out deluxe reissues of their earliest recordings; before all that, The Flaming Lips took hold of hammers and began wreaking havoc on the piano they had just recorded melodious music with. Wayne Coyne tells a story about when his father died, years ago, and his mother wanted to remember him by playing their favorite Tony Bennett song at his funeral. For her, the song represented a treasured memory—being 17 years old and falling in love—and she wanted to experience that one more time with her husband before was laid to rest. Coyne remembers reacting badly to her request. “I thought, ‘Why would you want to play that? My God, that’s just going to devastate us. Why the fuck would you want to play that?’ But you have to play it. You want to play it, because if you don’t, you don’t get to relive any of that.” More

Picture yourself in the mid-to-late ‘80s tooling around with your best buddies in a white van with little more than the handful of musical instruments you begged and borrowed for. Maybe to up your psychedelic credibility you have a bubble machine and a light-up rainbow spinner ball to splash a little color across the walls of the ramshackle clubs where you’ve managed to land gigs. Anyone lamenting The Flaming Lips’ later work as too experimental and inaccessible might find With a Little Help From My Fwends a refreshing detour. It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since The Flaming Lips released their genre-busting masterpiece The Soft Bulletin. That album changed the game for experimental independent musicians and helped pave the way for indie rock to come.
