Mark Foster

Under the Radar Presents: “Why Not Both” Podcast Featuring Mark Foster of Foster the People

May 22, 2020

Welcome to Why Not Both Wednesdays. Every week, in partnership with the Why Not Both podcast, we’ll be presenting new podcast episodes that explore how multiple passions inform the inspiring lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives.

Like everyone else, Mark Foster has a lot on his mind. However, as we discussed on this week’s episode, that means the nature of creativity is much like a 4-year-old child or a skittish cat…you have to make it feel safe and welcome and be just the right amount of excited when it comes to visit. The Foster the People frontman also considered how pressure and uncertainty can be hazardous and wild but also can turn into amazing creative work—and how when we all focus on one goal, like solving how Coronavirus is affecting us, you may get amazing and unintended results.

For updates, be sure to follow Why Not Both on Instagram and Twitter. For previous episodes, including Alison Mosshart, Phantogram, and Kate Nash, click over to view our abundance of listening options.

To keep up with Foster the People, hit the follow button on Instagram and Twitter. Their new single “It’s Okay to Be Human” is out now, and—bonus—they’ve got a new single “Lamb’s Wool,” out this Friday, May 22, so may we suggest a presave?

May 08, 2020

Welcome to Why Not Both Wednesdays. Every week, in partnership with the Why Not Both podcast, we’ll be presenting new podcast episodes that explore how multiple passions inform the inspiring lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives.

Alice Bag is a living LA legend, and we were thrilled to chat with her about her new album Sister Dynamite as well as her book Violence Girl. She exemplifies what it means to be truly punk rock, balancing her time in The Bags while teaching elementary school and later writing a book while raising her daughter. We love that Alice amplifies the voices of other women in the punk music scene through her archive on her website and keeps us moving throughout California lockdown with her Instagram workout videos. A true hero for our times.

For updates, be sure to follow Why Not Both on Instagram and Twitter. For previous episodes, including Juana Molina, Simon Raymonde, and Best Coast, shimmy over to our link buffet.

Alice Bag’s new album Sister Dynamite is out May 8 on In the Red Records. Until then, keep up with her on Twitter and Instagram. You can also peep her outstanding video for album single “Spark.”

Under the Radar Presents: “Why Not Both” Podcast Featuring Local Natives

May 01, 2020

Welcome to Why Not Both Wednesdays. Every week, in partnership with the Why Not Both podcast, we’ll be presenting new podcast episodes that explore how multiple passions inform the inspiring lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives.

Before California lockdown began, we got to spend an afternoon at Echo Park lake with Matt Frazier and Nik Ewing of Local Natives. We explored the unusual creative processes that led to their new album Violet Street and what it means to have artistic interests outside of music. The guys opened up about the value of experimentation and focusing on the process of making art instead of on the end product itself.

For updates, be sure to follow Why Not Both on Instagram and Twitter. For previous episodes, including Phantogram, Best Coast, and Kate Nash, dive into our abundant streaming options.

To keep up with Local Natives news (including future tour dates), follow them on Instagram and Twitter. For more on Nik’s art and music, you can follow him on Instagram and Twitter. To keep up with Matt’s music and pedaling, you can also find him on (you guessed it) Instagram and Twitter.

Welcome to season three of the podcast. (Season two lives on Under the Radar, and season one you can find on the WNB website.), To kick off this next era, we chatted with Joseph Fink, creator of Welcome to Night Vale, about the extraordinary circumstances that inspired his latest podcast, Our Plague Year. Fink talked about the state of the arts in America, and the crucial role that creativity plays in our lives. He points out that we all want to sit in the dark and have someone tell us a story, so it’s vital to have individual and structural support for artists so they can do just that.

Apr 13, 2020

Welcome to Why Not Both Weekends. While we’re on lockdown, we’ll be presenting the occasional Saturday episode of the Why Not Both podcast, which explores how multiple passions inform the inspiring lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives.

We were so fortunate to spend some time with Juana Molina, who called us from Argentina to talk about her latest album, and the creative surprises that have dropped into her life. She spoke about how the recent world events pushed her to live stream her latest concert and focus on slowing down, or as she put it, “every day is Sunday now.” We agree with Juana that we all can savor the opportunity to grow and change now that the world is temporarily on pause.
