British experimental musician Anna Meredith is releasing a new album, FIBS, on October 25 via Black Prince Fury. Now she has shared another song from it, “moonsmoons.” She has also released an Augmented Reality app for the song that uses Spatial Audio so that you can place various instrumental parts of the song in different areas in whichever space you are in. Check out the song below, as well as a video explaining the app. You can download the app here.

Meredith collaborated with designer and coder Arthur Carabott to put together the app.

A press release explains the app in more detail: “Expanding on the visceral landscape of Meredith’s compositions, the app embellishes the listeners sonic experience by placing six virtual speakers (in the form of the otherworldly hand-made ceramic objects from the album’s artwork, made by Anna’s sister Eleanor Meredith) around their environment, allowing them to experience the piece as if surrounded by the musical building blocks of the track. Just as in the real world, the closer the listener is to an object, the louder it is - allowing for ‘moonmoons’ to be absorbed intimately and for the listener to craft their own personal aural experience.”

Carabott had this to add in the press release: “Augmented Reality and Spatial Audio enable a way of exploring the details of a piece of music that is very natural, and allow the listener to play an active role in their own experience of a piece.”

Meredith had this to say: “Moonmoons are the moons of moons, and this idea of intergalactic worlds within worlds and of doubling and playing with scale, of zooming in and out is explored right through the piece, down to the cascading climactic slowing down textures which are actually constructed using the rest of the electronics compressed into two second gestures.”

Previously Meredith shared FIBS’ first single, “Paramour,” via a hypnotic video for the track featuring a Lego train traveling around Meredith and her band as they perform the song. It’s surely one of the best music videos of the year and “Paramour” also made it to #1 on our Songs of the Week list.

FIBS is the follow-up to her acclaimed 2016-released debut album, Varmints. Since then she has kept busy, doing the soundtrack to the Bo Burnham-directed film Eighth Grade and working as a classical composer. And, a press release points out, that she “was recently named a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s birthday honors list for services to music, making her Anna Meredith MBE.”

Of the album title FIBS, in a previous press release Meredith said fibs are “lies - but nice friendly lies, little stories and constructions and daydreams and narratives that you make for yourself or you tell yourself.”
