Howling Bells Release “Unbroken” Their First Single in Over a Decade

The Band Celebrate With A Special London Show at Camden’s Lock Tavern this November.

Howling Bells return with “Unbroken,” their first new music since 2014’s Heartstrings. The single, released today on Nude Records, will be celebrated with an intimate London date at Camden’s Lock Tavern on 5 November. It’s classic Howling Bells moody, atmospheric yet uplifting. “Unbroken” layers driving guitars around Juanita Stein’s beguiling melodic vocals, with lyrics reaching skywards with lines like “Always been lost in a big dream.” For Stein, the track reflects the strange perseverance that has kept the group together.

“You can either call it childlike or stupidity, but you have to have that in order to believe that something greater can happen,” Stein says. “Surviving as a band for over two decades requires extraordinary grit and, to some degree, irrationality. None of it really makes sense, except for the will and the love of the music itself. ‘Unbroken’ is very much a testament to all of this.”

Recorded with producer Ben Hillier (Blur, Depeche Mode, Elbow) at Agricultural Audio Studios, the single arrives with a performance video showing Stein, her brother Joel, and drummer Glenn Moule reunited on stage.

It’s the Australian band’s first release in over 10 years, but not a return from the wilderness. In the meantime, Juanita has released four solo albums, Joel explored new sounds with his Glassmaps project, while both he and Glenn have also appeared in Brandon Flowers’ touring band. Throughout, their friendship endured, and the idea of new Howling Bells music never quite disappeared.

Formed in Sydney before relocating to London, the band made their mark with 2006’s noir-rock debut Howling Bells, a record steeped in atmosphere yet rich in hooks. Subsequent albums Radio Wars (2009), The Loudest Engine (2011), and Heartstrings (2014) each expanded their palette, before “life just happened,” as Stein puts it.

With “Unbroken,” Howling Bells step back into view, unbowed, and very much unbroken.
