Mudhoney have announced a new album, Digital Garbage, their first in five years, and have shared its first single, “Paranoid Core.” Digital Garbage is due out September 28 via Sub Pop. Check out “Paranoid Core” below, followed by the album’s tracklist and cover art, as well as the band’s upcoming tour dates.

Mudhoney features vocalist Mark Arm, guitarist Steve Turner, bassist Guy Maddison, and drummer Dan Peters. Digital Garbage is the Pacific Northwest band’s tenth album in 30 years. A press release says the album is “a barbed-wire-trimmed collection of sonic brickbats.”

Arm says of the album in a press release: “My sense of humor is dark, and these are dark times. I suppose it’s only getting darker.”

Digital Garbage‘s title comes from the outro of the album’s “Kill Yourself Live,” which is about social media. Arm explains in the press release: “I’m not on social media, so my experience is somewhat limited. But people really seem to find validation in the likes-and then there’s Facebook Live, where people have streamed torture and murder, or, in the case of Philando Castile, getting murdered by a cop…. In the course of writing that song, I thought about how, once you put something out there online, you can’t wipe it away. It’s always going to be there-even if no one digs it up, it’s still out there floating somewhere.”

It’s not all doom and gloom, however, as the album closes with “Oh Yeah,” which a press release describes as “a brief celebration of skateboarding, surfing, biking, and the joy provided by these escape valves.” Arm comments on the song: “I would’ve really just loved to write songs about just hanging out on the beach, and going on a nice vacation. But, you know, that probably doesn’t make for great rock.”
