Jamie Lidell and Luke Schneider are both well-known in their respective spheres of experimental music. Lidell’s compositions lean into intricate microhouse and techno beats, smoky neo-soul drama, and dramatic symphonic constructions, while Schneider crafts expansive ambient soundscapes from spectral pedal steel guitar, melding cosmic country, new age, and shoegaze. Both artists have already had busy years一Lidell shared his latest album, Places of Unknowing, in July, while Schneider shared his own album, For Dancing in Quiet Light, in August.

Their two styles converge in that both musicians share an attentive ear for exploratory tones and textures, a central element to their forthcoming collaborative album, A Companion For the Spaces Between Dreams. Lidell and Schneider met while making a promotional video for Moog, and over the course of two days, they traced out the five lengthy suites that make up A Companion For the Spaces Between Dreams. Though the resulting record is a densely detailed and enveloping experimental and ambient experience, Lidell also envisions it as a “sonic tool” to aid in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy sessions.

“A mind is often found more exposed during psychedelic experiences,” Lidell explains. “Specifically in a therapeutic setting, where trust is key to approach issues and work through events in the way of growth. This is music to support and guide the listening with or without psychedelic sensory heightening.”

Last month, Lidell and Schneider shared the album’s lead single, “The Passing,” and today they’re back with the record’s sprawling opening track, “New Land,” premiering with Under the Radar.

“New Land” acts as a suitably grand introduction to the record, stretching out languidly over 12 minutes of rippling modular synth tones, droning pedal steel, and hypnotic electronic textures.

Lidell and Schneider’s compositions move with a gentle fluidity, constantly shifting but doing so in dense, swelling waves. The opening minutes are consumed by Lidell’s ascendant synths while the middle portion settles into a subtly textured space, moving through echoing and even sinister expanses before ending on a sedate ambient comedown. Lidell and Schneider say of the track, “New Land recalls prickly textures and sinewy drones – bringing to mind dewy flowers at dawn.”
