Tomorrow, indie singer/songwriter Johnny Delaware is set to return with his new album, Para Llevar. Delaware first cut his teeth as a solo artist, releasing his solo debut Secret Wave before drawing greater acclaim as the co-founder of South Carolina indie roots outfit Sutso. After years of recording and touring with Sutso, Delaware relocated to Mexico City and began working on his solo material again, recording his 2022 solo album, Energy of Light. He has spent the past few years bouncing back and forth across the border for tour dates with Sutso while working on his latest record, Para Llevar.
Para Llevar translates roughly as “to go” or “to take,” a fitting name for an album that ambles easily between Latin folk, cosmic country, and Laurel Canyon singer/songwriter fare. As Delaware describes, “This is a very nomadic album. I recorded it in studios in Mexico and the United States and in hotel rooms all across Latin America, and if you listen closely, you can hear bits and pieces of all those places and the people I met along the way. They’re all a part of me now.”
Delaware has already shared the singles “Running,” “Never Let Go,” and “Incógnita” from the album, and today he’s sharing an early listen to another track, “You Alone (Are the Revolution),” premiering with Under the Radar.
Most songs about revolution feel bracing and confrontational. In contrast, Johnny Delaware’s revolution is more sunny and internal. The track drifts atop breezy rhythms, twangy guitars, and airy vocal harmonies, all as Deleware offers a plaintive lyrical petition to rise above partisanship: “I watched the house of cards falling down / Now big trouble’s on the loose / Saw grown adults turning into kids / From the boogeyman on the news / Just close your eyes and try to focus on love / And put your body in the sun / And know that you alone are the revolution.”
Delaware explains, “Musically, I wanted to go for a Dwight Yoakam kinda vibe. The subject matter is about unity. By taking care of our communities and raising healthy families, we naturally have the revolution in all of us. Politics are more polarizing than they need to be, and both sides are funded by lobbyists. Despite our differences, I always suggest finding ways to communicate and love each other.”
