Next month, indie singer/songwriter Wryn is set to share Shapes, their latest record and their first album under their name. Although Wryn has recorded under other names before, Shapes acts as a debut, re-introducing their patient and homespun style of indie folk. The album began to cohere just as the lockdown was ending, with Wryn pairing with Bella Blasko (The National, Feist, Big Red Machine) on production and Grey Bear Erikson to engineer the album. Later, they also brought on drummer JT Bates (Bonny Light Horseman, Big Red Machine) and bassist/saxophonist Mike Lewis (Bon Iver) for additional instrumentation before signing with Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records to release the album.
The full album is out on March 28th and ahead of the record’s release Wryn has already shared their lead single, “Steady,” followed by last month’s release, “Snake.” Today, they’re back with another new track, “Slow Down,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Slow Down” is a winding folk confessional, centering on a warm vocal and acoustic melody. Later the track begins to fill out with hints of horns and scattered percussion, adding delicate shading to the track without ever breaking through its placid surface. Wryn’s lyrics come out in a conversational tumble, mirroring the meandering guitar line as they meditate on the fleeting passage of time: “Turn around and body is floating / Even now in this moment / Almost forget outside this window / All of the world keeps turning / Without anyone to tell the spinning to slow down.”
Wryn says of the track, “‘Slow Down’ was created in March of 2021 during a workshop with Buck Meek through School of Song. At the time I was exploring the liminal - letting words flow out naturally while playing something meditative on guitar, untangling the meaning after the fact.
“Slow Down” is about noticing those bursts of joy in the middle of everyday chaos. About slowing down, being present, and recognizing that those moments are fleeting, which is exactly what makes them so meaningful.”
Along with the track, Wryn is also sharing an accompanying video, directed by Aaron Coleman. He says of the video, “In early 2024, Wryn and I started to have creative sessions over Zoom where we would spitball ideas. As time went on and we discussed more and more what Astral Projection would look and feel like. We ended up developing a really interesting world, and lore, around the narrative and characters.
Wryn is obviously a very gifted lyricist and I found that with that ability also came an incredible ability to write fiction and just dream up things in general. I’m very proud of what we made together.”
