Brian Blomerth

Lilly Wave

Published by Anthology Editions

Dec 05, 2024

John C. Lilly was a scientist and pioneer like few others. He invented the isolation tank, studied the communication of bottlenose dolphins, and experimented with ketamine and other psychedelics, often within the deprivation of his isolation tank. He also suffered blackouts, comas, accidents, hospitalizations, and near death experiences due to his research.

Brian Blomerth has spent years illustrating for comics, zines, and album covers, and has released two graphic novels, Bicycle Day, recounting Albert Hoffman’s first acid trip, and Mycelium Wassonii, about psychedelic mushrooms. His third book, Lilly Wave, chronicles John C. Lilly’s life and studies. After a short introduction by Dr. Rick Doblin, which familiarizes the reader with Lilly’s life and work, Blomerth’s graphic novel comes to life.

Lilly Wave is simply stunning. Blomerth’s illustrations are as psychedelic and mind-bending as his subject’s research. Each page of Lilly Wave is simply filled with color and movement that will have you easily staring for hours, enrapt. The story is part of the fun, but it’s Blomerth’s illustrations that are the real draw. The book will have you picking up Blomerth’s other books, if you don’t already have them; Lilly Wave entrances.
