Australian singer/songwriter/guitarist Courtney Barnett and American singer/songwriter/guitarist Kurt Vile teamed up for a new collaborative album, Lotta Sea Lice, which came out last October via Matador, as well as a collaborative fall tour featuring an “all-star band.” Now they have shared a documentary on their performance last November at Jersey City’s Loew’s Jersey Theatre. Kurt Vincent and Irene Chin directed the 34-minute documentary. Not only does it include interviews with Barnett and Vile and features live footage from their performance, it also sheds a light on how the historic theater (which opened in 1929) was brought back by a local volunteer organization after being abandoned for years. It was made in conjunction with WeTransfer. Watch it below.

Co-director Vincent had this to say about the documentary: “While editing the movie Irene and I would constantly look at each other and smile. We were editing scenes with two of our favorite musicians performing in a magical setting. We dreamed up this crazy movie about a mysterious movie palace and this concert - and the film turned out exactly how we imagined it. That’s not always how it works out.”

Previously they shared a video for the album’s excellent first single, “Over Everything” (which was our #1 Song of the Week). Then they shared a video for another song from the album, “Continental Breakfast,” (which was also one of our Songs of the Week). Lotta Sea Lice was also our Album of the Week.

Barnett is releasing a new album, Tell Me How You Really Feel, on May 18 via Mom + Pop/Marathon Artists/Milk! Records. Previously she shared its first single, “Nameless, Faceless,” via a video for the song. (It was our #1 Song of the Week.)

Barnett released her debut full-length album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, via Mom + Pop in 2015 and it landed at #6 on Under the Radar‘s Top 100 Albums of 2015 list. Vile’s last studio album, b’lieve i’m goin down…, also came out in 2015, via Matador. Read our interview with Vile about that album.
