Just who is Patrick Watson? For the best part of the last decade the Canadian singer/songwriter has produced a stream of brittle, gorgeous records that fly high over many of his contemporaries. Yet somehow Watson remains an enigmafaceless, unknown…unloved.

By any right, album number five should change that. For long-term admirers, it’s standard Watson fare; a series of bucolic, slow-winding country-tinted melodies led by his majestic falsetto swoop. The tenderized strains of “Alone in This World” and “Know That You Know,” in particular, are as heavenly as anything Watson has so far achieved.

But what does it mean for a man who can style songs as luscious as “Hearts” or the mournful, yet jubilant flutter of “Places You Will Go”? The truth is, probably nothing. He’ll continue to go on making these glorious sonic sweeps while the wider world continues to ignore them. For now, Patrick Watson will remain a wonderful secret.
