Roger Daltrey’s memoir is, at 241 pages, relatively brief. It does not expound exhaustively on every mundane detail of Daltrey’s life. It does not present its subject as godlike, bloviating about accomplishments, awards, excellences, and so forth. It is not holier than thou. Thanks A Lot Mr Kibblewhite instead is a concise, information-packed telling of Daltrey’s life without mincing of words or undue rambling. It hits the highs and the lows, marking important events, without excess. And in this, it hits its mark.

Daltrey, of course, founded The Who way back in the early ‘60s. In Thanks A Lot, he details his working class upbringing through his desire to start a band to replace his menial factory job and the years of success that followed with Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon. Anecdotes of his band’s exploits are plentiful, but Daltrey remains the straight man in what often seems like an array of fools. Daltrey is straight forward about his relationship with his bandmates, seemingly outcast from the craziness throughout the band’s heyday but forging lasting bonds with Townshend and even Moon toward the end of the latter’s days. Moon and Entwistle’s untimely passings are addressed poignantly.

In the end, Daltrey finds himself aging gracefully throughout a multitude of changes in the band that had always been his life’s passion. Thanks A Lot Mr Kibblewhite is a terrific telling of his life’s work. (us.macmillan.com/henryholt)
